Tech Training Wheels for Tweens
In person or online presentation. Technology-training Wheels for Tweens
A tailored, slow-tech approach to empower parents to manage screen-use.
Just like learning to drive a car, young people need appropriate lessons in safe, savvy use of digital technologies, games and eventually, social media.
While most social media platforms require users to be over 13, the reality is that many young people are accessing these highly compelling and sensory rich spaces earlier and earlier. Both parents and young people need support (not shame) to develop positive tech-habits and healthy digital diets that are tailored to their values and interests.
Delaying access to social media is ideal, but demonstration and role modelling of best practice is needed along the way to help young people develop the ‘defensive driving’ skills to suit a variety of online terrains and experiences they are likely to encounter.
This session will explore practical strategies to help parents of primary schoolers intentionally and intelligently introduce appropriate online activities (ie: slowly!), role model effective skills (ie: walk the talk!) and engage in meaningful discussions around healthy habits with screens (ie: collaborate and communicate)
Key learning outcomes and insights
- Deepen your insights into the digital lives and online cultures that young people engage in.
- Understand how developing minds can be shaped (both positively and negatively) by the content and activities they consume.
- Develop strategies to gradually introduce independence and autonomy online, while maintaining key principles of safety (both physically and psychologically).
