Screens & Basic Psychological needs
Understand the psychology behind why online activities feel so magnetic and how to break the spell of screens
Screen activities are often described as ‘addictive’ but we’re often compelled by our innate needs which are satisfied deeply online.
This lesson explores Self Determination Theory as it relates to online activities and the way that the 3C’s of competence, connection and control create an allure for many of us, but especially young people.
Importantly the strategies to manage technology use (and related online activities) are explored, along with ‘IRL’ (in real life) ways to meet these psychological needs.
Key learning outcomes and insights
Participants will learn:
- An introduction to self-determination theory and basic psychological needs as a key driver of behaviour
- The way that online activities meet these needs and examples of diverse ways young people engage in online spaces.
- Ways to blend these needs being met online and offline, appropriately.
